Late spring holiday 2024; Thursday 2 May

Wittenbeck, Germany

We were up much earlier this morning, and away before 10:00 am. Our first port of call was an Edeka, but this was a mistake as it didn't have the "Brotzeiteier" or coloured, hard-boiled eggs, that I wanted. The Netto of two days earlier hadn't had them, either. It also didn't have any cucumber salad, although I did get potato salad and white cabbage salad (Lidl actually sold that last time they had a German week, and it was lovely!), and some Leberkäse to have one of these evenings - I think I've said before that it is neither liver nor cheese, but a kind of sausage that one fries up and serves, ideally with chips and an egg on top.

We then headed off to Lübeck, where we stopped for a walk and had lunch - I chose the wrong restaurant, really, as all they could offer us was Flammekeuchen, which, while delicious, lingered! I didn't have anything else afterwards, as I wanted to pop into DM and Edeka (which also didn't have the eggs) across the road, and the taste of the Flammekeuchen stayed in my mouth the entire afternoon, and is only just going now, after a cup of tea!

So we finished our walk round Lübeck and returned to the WoMo before our parking-ticket expired. We then headed off here, to Wittenbeck, where we have stayed before for the Mollibahn, which we hope to use tomorrow to go and explore Bad Doberan properly. We are here for two nights this time.

Late spring holiday 2024 ; Wednesday 1 May

Schacht-Audorf, Schleswig-Holstein

Which numpty totally forgot that today is a public holiday in Europe? We could so easily have bought eggs and orange juice yesterday, had we thought, but we didn't. So tomorrow's breakfast will have to be ham on toast and then lunch can be eggs, when we have bought some. We haven't even any tomatoes to have fried tomatoes on toast with our ham! Actually, we do have a couple of mushrooms....

So, anyway, I slept badly last night, with the net result that I had trouble waking up this morning, and breakfast was more nearly at 10:00 than 09:00. Not good.

We finally got away about 11, and headed north, stopping once for coffee and then again for lunch.

Last summer, when we were on our inter-rail trip, the train had crossed the high bridge at Rendsburg. It's rather spectacular, as it goes round in a huge circle to reach the bridge. Anyway, when we were going over it, I saw a motorhome park below, and thought that would be a lovely place for a stopover.

It would have been, had there been any spaces. Sadly, it said it was full, although we think it was mostly people's having paid for 24 hours which had not yet expired. However, we knew there were two other places we could try if it was full, so we came to this one, which, if anything, is even nicer. It is right on the canal-side, and we have seen loads of ships going past.

We went for a bit of a walk up to a nearby snack bar - debated eating there, but a bit on the greasy-spoon side, plus we have an aubergine that really ought to be used. It's not just quite as warm as last night, and sitting out is not quite so pleasurable, so I think we'll eat in the WoMo. I had better go and start cooking very soon!
